Aimed at attracting the best talent for Civil Engineering studies, a Scholarship Programme in Civil Engineering has been created in a partnership between UMinho and businesses in the Engineering, Civil Engineering and Public Works areas.
The programme consists of study grants for the best 15 students of the Integrated Master's Course in Civil Engineering in the years 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. The grant equals the value of the annual tuition fee and is maintained for the full 5 years of the course, provided the student remains among the best of the course.
The students selected to receive the scholarships commit to accepting a one-year paid internship, on graduation, to the value of at least 2.5 times the minimum wage, provided the business partners wish to offer this.

Over the last few years, and as a result of the exemplary involvement of the Lions Club of Braga, dozens of firms, recognizing the importance of higher education for building a more competent society, have become benefactors of this fund.

PT-FLAD Chair in Intelligent Cities and Governance
E-Governance (EGOV), understood as maximizing the Information and Communication Technologies for transforming public governance and aimed at increasing efficiency, efficacy, transparency and democratic scrutiny, constitutes a multidisciplinary area of research with an enormous impact on the evolution of society and the state. At the same time, research into new concepts of cities, generically labelled Smart Cities, provides ever more solutions to the multiple challenges created by the global process of urbanization. The University of Minho has had an important role in these areas for many years. After May 2014, it became the home for the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV), the first United Nations presence in Portugal. Simultaneously, it embraced a Development Unit of the Agency for Administrative Modernization (AMA), which hopes to have a laboratory for prototyping new solutions and projects in EGOV. In the equally multidisciplinary area of Smart Cities, the University of Minho has developed various support technologies (e.g. in IT security, cyber systems and big data) and projected pilot initiatives.
In this context, the University of Minho has created the PT-FLAD Chair in Smart Cities and Smart Governance, supported by Portugal Telecom (PT) and by the Luso-American Foundation for Development (FLAD).
